Paragon Solutions Spotlight: Vacation Security Tips

07-25-24

This is part of a series – Paragon Solutions SpotlightRead previous posts here, here and here. These articles will discuss topics designed to help, educate and inform you. Today’s featured article addresses vacation security tips. We thank our SVP, Information Technology and Deposit Operations, Kingston Blenis, for sharing his expertise today.

Ensuring cybersecurity during summer vacation is crucial as people often let their guard down while traveling. Here are some tips to help you stay safe during your travels:

  1. Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi networks can be insecure. Avoid accessing sensitive information or conducting financial transactions on public networks. If you must use public Wi-Fi, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection.
  2. Turn Off Automatic Connectivity: Disable the automatic connection to Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth to prevent your device from connecting to unknown networks automatically.
  3. Avoid Public Charging Stations: Use your own charger and plug it into a power outlet instead of using public charging stations, which can potentially be used to steal your data (a practice known as “juice jacking”).
  4. Limit Social Media Sharing: Avoid posting travel plans or location details on social media, as this can alert criminals to your absence and make you a target for break-ins.
  5. Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions. Set up alerts for unusual activity if your financial institution offers this feature.
  6. Keep Devices Secure: Do not leave your devices unattended in public places. Use hotel safes if available.
  7. Review our Cell Phone tips: If you haven’t already read our Solutions Spotlight regarding Cell Phone security, I highly recommend reading it now.
  1. Check for Malware: Run a full system scan on your devices to ensure they haven’t been compromised.
  2. Change Passwords: Consider changing your passwords, especially if you used public Wi-Fi or suspect any unusual activity.

By following these tips, you can enjoy a safer and more secure summer vacation experience.
