Paragon Employees Participate in Junior Achievement Program with Hawkins Mill
05-31-13
Paragon National Bank employees Lisa Barden and Patrick O’Hearn recently helped teach Ms.
Martin’s third grade class at Hawkins Mill Elementary School about real world
economics through a six-week Junior Achievement program. For seven consecutive
years, Paragon has sponsored Martin’s classroom by making seasonal visits
throughout the year to play games and make crafts with the students.
“Paragon has a strong relationship
with Ms. Martin’s classroom and we are proud of Lisa and Patrick for devoting
time through Junior Achievement to teach her students about such significant
and timely topics,” said Robert Shaw, Chief Executive Officer at Paragon.
Barden, First Vice President of
Treasury Management, has worked with the Junior Achievement program for ten
years. O’Hearn, Vice President of Private Banking, was recruited by Barden to
get involved with the Junior Achievement program this year.
During the six-week program,
Barden and O’Hearn taught students in Martin’s class about the zones within a
community, how buildings are constructed and the role of a city planner. In
addition, the students were given the opportunity to become entrepreneurs by
opening a restaurant of their own and learned about reporting when they created
a classroom newspaper. To end the year, the class learned about basic banking
concepts, which included how to make a deposit, write a check and balance an
account.
“The relationship we have with Ms.
Martin at Hawkins Mill and Junior Achievement is fantastic,” said Barden. “We
are lucky to be involved with this wonderful program that teaches kids
real-world economic concepts, and we truly enjoyed getting to know some of the
students on an individual basis.”
